Common Questions
Do I need a referral to see a psychologist?
No you don't need a referral to see a psychologist. However if you'd like to access Medicare rebates for your sessions then yes, you will need a referral and Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP) from your GP. You can get up to 10 Medicare-subsidised individual sessions per calendar year.
How do I organise a Mental Health Care Plan?
Call your local GP clinic and request an appointment for a Mental Health Care Plan; it will be slightly longer than a standard consultation. Your GP will collect some information from you about what you're needing support for and prepare your MHCP. Please provide these documents to us ahead of your initial consultation.
What can I expect in a first session?
The first session is an opportunity for your psychologist to get to know you, discuss your concerns, and together develop your goals for therapy. The main focus is gathering information from you to understand your history and complete a thorough assessment.
Can I call my psychologist if I'm in crisis and need support immediately?
While our psychologists strive to support you when that support is needed, mindpro Psychology is not a crisis service and our psychologists are not available on short notice. There are a number of crisis services available to those who need immediate support, including Lifeline (13 11 14), the Suicide Call Back Service (1300 659 647), or your closest area mental health service which you can find here: https://vahi.vic.gov.au/mental-health-services
